Digital Foundations Program (DFP)

Build essential digital, employability and workplace capabilities through guided learning, practical projects and mentoring, preparing for junior and entry-level professional opportunities.

Build the digital and professional foundations needed to begin working confidently across business, data and project environments. This 16 to 18-week pathway combines guided development, practical activities and mentoring for career starters and career changers.

Starting point and progression

The Foundations tier introduces core subjects before deeper professional specialisation. Discuss your experience and support needs with our team to agree an appropriate starting point. The Digital Professional Program offers a next stage for learners ready to develop broader professional capability.

What you will learn

  • Personal development, learning skills, mindset, career exploration and professional habits.
  • Applied Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; browser use and professional email, reports and digital communication.
  • Online collaboration through tools such as Teams, Slack, Trello, Asana and ClickUp.
  • AI fundamentals and prompt engineering; introductory automation and machine learning concepts.
  • Business analysis, project management, project initiation and scope planning.
  • Scrum and Agile roles, working practices and relevant certification routes.
  • Data analytics, business intelligence and introductory SQL queries.
  • UI/UX principles and Balsamiq mockups; introductory Power BI dashboards and Tableau visualisations.
  • Cybersecurity and data-protection awareness; communication, teamwork and other professional skills.
  • CV development, LinkedIn profile preparation and interview practice.

Practical work and portfolio

Apply the learning through a digital report and an Agile simulation capstone. Use these activities to practise organising information, collaborating with others and communicating findings. Retain suitable examples of your work for your developing portfolio.

What you can develop

  • Use everyday digital tools to produce and communicate workplace information.
  • Describe how business analysis, projects, data and Agile teamwork support organisational work.
  • Practise introductory reporting, querying and visualisation activities.
  • Explain your practical contributions using portfolio evidence and interview examples.

Career directions

Potential career directions include junior business analysis, project support, Agile team support and junior data or reporting work. Your experience, practical evidence and employer requirements will determine which roles are appropriate. Use the National Careers Service business analyst profile and data analyst profile to explore role responsibilities and entry routes.

UK salary and contract-rate guide

Evidence reviewed: 5 October 2026. These examples describe the employment market for named roles and help you explore career progression.

For a foundation learner, use the following as a view of the wider career journey, not a junior-only salary range or an immediate post-course expectation. National Careers Service occupation profiles span starter to experienced workers.

Junior contract-rate evidence is currently limited. Professional contract benchmarks appear in the next-stage programme guides and should not be treated as entry-level expectations.

Salary and contract-rate figures are indicative UK market ranges based on publicly available evidence reviewed at the stated date. Actual earnings vary according to experience, location, employer, sector, qualifications, responsibilities and employment type. Course completion does not guarantee employment, promotion or a particular level of earnings.

Mentoring and career support

Mentoring starts from the beginning and connects learning with practical development. The programme includes six months of job-search support and three months of in-role support, as shown in the programme information. This support helps you prepare and progress; it does not guarantee employment or a particular salary.

Certification and assessment information

Practical work and portfolio evidence help you demonstrate what you have learned. Ask our team to confirm the assessment arrangements, any RDE certificates, relevant vendor examination routes and what is included in your offer before enrolling. A programme completion certificate and an external professional qualification are different awards.

Your next step

Register your interest to discuss your starting point, programme availability, delivery arrangements, any entry expectations and fees or funding options. The team will help you assess whether this pathway fits your goals.
