Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate is an intermediate certification centred on turning data into useful analysis with Power BI. The current PL-300 route expects candidates to prepare data, model data, visualise and analyse information, and manage and secure Power BI assets.

Check the current certification before you plan

Microsoft lists the certification as intermediate and identifies the role as Data Analyst. The certification page was last updated on 20 April 2026. Microsoft currently states that the PL-300 assessment is 100 minutes and that the certification renews every 12 months. Microsoft provides a free online renewal assessment for eligible holders under its current renewal model.

Exam content changes as the product changes. Use the current Microsoft study guide as your source of truth rather than relying on an old course outline or practice test. The English-language skills measured were updated on 20 April 2026.

Use the four current skills areas as your study map

The current study guide weights preparing data, modelling data, and visualising and analysing data at 25–30% each. Managing and securing Power BI accounts for 15–20%. Those percentages are useful for allocating study time, but they are not a reason to neglect any domain.

Preparation should include Power Query for connecting, profiling, cleaning and transforming data; modelling relationships and calculations; report design and analysis; and workspace, refresh, access and security concepts. Microsoft also expects proficiency with Data Analysis Expressions (DAX).

Build one evidence project from raw data to governed report

Choose a safe practice dataset. Start with the raw source and write down the business question before opening Power BI. Profile the data, record quality issues and transform it using Power Query. Create a model that makes relationship direction and cardinality understandable. Add a date table where the analysis requires time intelligence.

Create a small set of measures using DAX. Build a report that answers the original question, not merely a page full of visuals. Check interaction, filters, mobile layout and accessibility. Then document how you would publish, refresh and secure the content in a workspace. If you use row-level security in the exercise, state the intended audience and test the role behaviour.

Keep screenshots or a short project note showing what you changed and why. That evidence is useful for learning and interviews even though it is not an official exam artefact.

Understand the RDE relationship

RDE provides a certification-preparation route aligned to the current PL-300 objectives. RDE does not currently include a Microsoft examination voucher with this route. Candidates book and pay for the official Microsoft examination separately through Microsoft's authorised process. Microsoft awards the certification after the candidate successfully satisfies the applicable examination requirements.

Prepare in four stages

Stage 1: diagnose. Use the current skills-measured list to identify where your practical experience is strongest and weakest.

Stage 2: practise. Complete focused exercises for Power Query, modelling, DAX, report design and security rather than relying only on passive video watching.

Stage 3: integrate. Build the end-to-end project described above and review it against the four skills areas.

Stage 4: exam readiness. Use Microsoft's current Practice Assessment and exam sandbox where available. Recheck the study guide shortly before the exam because Microsoft can update objectives.

Readiness checklist

  • Can you explain why you chose Import, DirectQuery or another connection approach in a scenario?
  • Can you clean and transform data without losing track of the business question?
  • Can you explain relationship cardinality, filter direction and the purpose of your DAX measures?
  • Can you make a report usable on mobile and consider accessibility?
  • Can you explain workspace roles, refresh and row-level security at a practical level?
