Understand the role

Digital marketing assistant work can support content, campaign coordination and reporting, but responsibilities differ between employers. Start with the intended audience and useful action before selecting a channel. A sample campaign should demonstrate judgement as well as visual polish.

The National Careers Service marketing executive profile describes several routes, including starting in a marketing department as an administrator or assistant. Its executive responsibilities are broader than every assistant vacancy, so compare the actual scope instead of treating the profile as a fixed junior job description.

Compare entry routes and requirements

The official profile lists routes through education, apprenticeships and relevant work. It includes the Level 3 Multi-channel Marketer apprenticeship. It also describes relevant experience from work such as sales or customer service. Check the specific employer's essential requirements before selecting a route.

Compare assistant adverts for content writing, scheduling, analytics and coordination. Note which tools are required and which can be learned after joining. A portfolio can show practice, but does not substitute for every requirement. Keep evidence of how you checked a claim and responded to feedback, not only your finished design.

Build a practical evidence project

Fictional practice brief: a community organisation wants people to register for a free introductory event. Define the audience, their likely question and the action the content should support. Make clear that the organisation and campaign are invented.

Write a short content brief with purpose, channel, message, approval owner and a measurable question. Draft two versions of a post and explain the difference. Check that the event details agree, links are meaningful, imagery is relevant and wording does not promise an outcome the event cannot deliver.

Create a small campaign tracker with invented dates, impressions, clicks and registrations. Define each measure and avoid treating clicks as proof of registration. Calculate one rate with a stated denominator and check it manually. Explain why a small fictional dataset cannot establish a reliable causal conclusion about which message works best.

Ask a reviewer to check the copy and tracker against the brief. Record their feedback and your changes. Include a decision about what you would investigate next rather than declaring the campaign successful because one number increased.

Prepare applications and interviews

Your evidence pack can contain the brief, two copy drafts, a checked tracker and a revision note. Explain which elements you created, what is invented and what remains uncertain. Do not present practice revenue, engagement or audience figures as real client results.

For an application, connect a genuine example of audience communication or organised delivery to a requirement in the advert. At interview, practise explaining why you chose a message and how you would check it before publication. Being able to discuss a mistake and its correction can demonstrate a useful working process.

Compare pay and development

The National Careers Service marketing executive profile lists £23,000 starter to £50,000 experienced per year, checked on 8 October 2026. This is a broader executive profile, not a guaranteed assistant salary. Compare current assistant vacancies, location, hours and responsibilities before making a salary expectation.

Possible development can involve specialising in content, campaign delivery or analysis, depending on evidence and opportunities. Select the next capability from feedback and role requirements. Learning a platform is useful when you can explain the work it supports and the limits of its measurements.

Plan four weeks of focused practice

Week 1: compare three relevant, dated job adverts and select one capability to practise. Record the essential requirements, the evidence you already have and the gaps that need attention. Do not copy requirements into your CV unless you can support them.

Week 2: complete the fictional exercise in this guide. Keep the original material, your decisions and your checks together. Work within the scope described rather than adding complex tools that obscure your reasoning.

Week 3: ask another person to review whether your evidence is clear and reproducible. Record the feedback, make one useful revision and explain the reason for it. Check that confidential or identifying material has not entered the pack.

Week 4: prepare a short evidence explanation and adapt one application to a suitable vacancy. Review the remaining gaps and decide whether further practice, advice or a specific qualification is the next useful step. This is an RDE practice plan, not a guarantee of employment or promotion.
